The Upward Bound Concept--Chico Style:
The project is located in the Department of Professional Studies in Education
(PSED) within the College of Communication and Education. Fiscal
management, as with all university grants, is shared between The
CSU Chico University Research Foundation, Sponsored Projects and Associated
Students Accounting. Upward Bound has evolved into a four-component
program: academic development, career exploration, personal development
and alumni programs. A management by objectives drives this program´s
organization. Theoretically, if students have developed career goals,
they should be better able to select the most appropriate college
and major, to undertake the best high school course schedule to be eligible
for that college and to bring some previous work experience to that
major and career. Concurrently, the participant will be provided ample
opportunity to explore and enhance personal talents and interests, to practice
good communication techniques, to gain confidence, to take risks, to develop
resiliency--in other words, to be strong and independent. The
program has two parts: Academic Year and Summer. Academic year services
include tutoring, advising, workshops, college visitation field trips,
leadership development and college preparation, most of which takes
place in the target schools. The summer component includes a six-week
residential program on the CSU Chico campus. Programs include college-classes, internships,
enrichment, extra-curricular activities, workshops, leadership development
and personal development activities.
