Earlier this semester, Alina Chavera from Hamilton High
It’s a program where you become a full time college student in your senior year. The program pays for your books and schooling. You get credits for both high school and college. It’s a great opportunity.
Well, I heard of it through my counselor at first, but declined. Later on, one of my teachers talked to the program coordinator, Darryl Eisele, and he called me during the summer.
University Connection has helped me prepare myself for next year. It helped me to learn how to go through admissions, get used to large classes and college life.
My tutor and I had to find a time that we both had free. The first semester I met with my tutor in between classes and now I meet [with him] before class in Siskiyou Hall.
The professors at college are more strict with work. If there is a deadline, you have to meet it. At the same time though, they are mostly open to any discussion and quite laid back.
So far, I guess I have gotten off easily. Most of my classes don’t have that much work. The work that I have done is actually about the same level as in high school, but just more [of it].
It’s a huge responsibility! In a lot of classes, role is not taken, so it becomes your responsibility to show up.
I would definitely say to do it! Be careful with the extra freedom, talk to your professors and just take advantage of it. It’s fun!
Definitely! In University Connection, you get the whole enchilada. The professors don’t know [that] you’re a high school student and neither do the other students. You don’t get any special treatment.
I understand [that] leaving high school is tough, but in the long run it’s worth it. You get a head start in college for free. Also you get more “hands-on” experience and prepare for what will come in whatever college you choose to attend. Take a chance, do it! Return to University Connection home page.
