Earlier this semester, La Khang from Oroville High School agreed to answer some questions about University Connection. La is attending Chico State.

  • What is University Connection?

University Connection is a program for selected senior [high school students] to get an early experience of college. University Connection is for students who want to be teachers.

  • How did you learn about University Connection?

I heard about University Connection from a friend; so I went hunting for applications and information.

  • How has University Connection helped you?

University [Connection] has helped me by teaching me time-management, study skills, test-taking skills and organization. It has also helped me get an experience with college and prepare me for next year.

  • How do you manage your Upward Bound tutoring while you’re not at your high school?

Last semester I was tutored by Delmy. I went to her office during my hour breaks between classes. This semester I am [being] tutored by Kham Vang and I meet him every Friday at 11:00am.

  • How would you compare your professors at college with your teachers at high school?

The professors at college don’t have favorites. They also teach extra fast and not as detailed, which means that you get the details from reading the book. Plus, professors don’t stay after class to help you, but you’ll have to go meet them during their office hours.

  • How about the amount and level of work that is expected for a class?

The amount and level of work depends on which classes you choose to take. This semester I am taking Chemistry which requires a ton of reading from the textbook for better understanding.

  • Does the extra freedom of being a college student present any special challenges?

The extra freedom of being a college student presents the challenge of time management. You will have to use your time wisely in order to complete all of the given assignments.

  • What suggestions would you give juniors who might be interested in doing University Connection next year?

Juniors who might be interested in University Connection should be prepared for two fast semesters. You should always attend class and be on top of everything because if you miss a class, you will miss out.

  • Do you feel that University Connection helps prepare you for the life of a full time college student?

Yes, University Connection helps prepare me for the life of a full time college student. Attending CSU Chico my senior year has given me the opportunity to start my GE [General Education] classes and I will also start as a sophomore next year.

  • What else would you like our readers to know about University Connection?

University Connection is a very fun program to be in. You get the chance to meet new people, people from other countries in the program, along with college students in your college courses. Also, take advantage of the program and use the time wisely.
