Earlier this semester, Sandy Vang from Oroville High School agreed to answer some questions about University Connection. Sandy is attending Chico State.

  • What is University Connection?

The University Connection is a program for students who want to become teachers and [it] provides college experiences.

  • How did you learn about University Connection?

I have a cousin who told be about the College and University connection programs back when I was a freshman.

  • How has University Connection helped you?

I learned a lot of new things from the classes that I’ve taken. I feel that I am more independent, responsible and mature.

  • How do you manage your Upward Bound tutoring while you’re not at your high school?

I still have tutoring once every week just like in high school, but I have it during my own free time and I don’t get call slips.

  • How would you compare your professors at college with your teachers at high school?

Some of my professors at Chico State are very professional in the way they dress, lecture and give notes. On the other hand, some are very outgoing and friendly. Professors are given [the] right to say whatever they want, unlike high school teachers. Overall, I think both my professors and teachers are the same.

  • How about the amount and level of work that is expected for a class?

There are readings in most classes that I don’t usually do. A lot of essays and quizzes [are] online. The best thing is to finish the assignments as soon as possible and be stress-free.

  • Does the extra freedom of being a college student present any special challenges?

Managing my own time is difficult. Most of the time I just want to have fun because I have a lot of free time. However, I can prevent myself [from getting in trouble] if I go home early and study. Staying at school is a distraction for me if I’m with friends but if I am by myself I can concentrate more, unless I study with a group.

  • What suggestions would you give juniors who might be interested in doing University Connection next year?

Juniors who are interested should definitely apply for this program because it provides a head start [in college]. My suggestion would be to be responsible and don’t procrastinate because it can be really stressful at times. I know because I’ve procrastinated and still do every now and then. So don’t follow in my footsteps because it’s a very bad choice.

  • Do you feel that University Connection helps prepare you for the life of a full-time college student?

It really helped me prepare myself as a college student because now I feel how it is to be a college student.

  • What else would you like our readers to know about University Connection?

Some college classes are challenging but the university class itself is very simple. It’s a great way to meet new people and feel like an adult. Readers, if you are a junior you should apply.
