Melanie Martens - Interim Office Manager

My name is Melanie Martens and I am the new interim office manager for Upward Bound. We are busy gearing up for our summer session. It’s a whole new world to me but I am looking forward to it.

My husband, Rick, and I have lived in Orland for over 30 years. We have three grown children: James, Heather and Zane.

I love sports especially the Kings, 49ers and Yankees. My hobbies include: quilting, reading and gardening. I am happiest when the family gathers around the firepit in our backyard sharing memories and laughing---lots of laughing.

Guadalupe Ramirez-Carrillo - Senior/Alumni Coordinator

Who I Am

I was born in Guadalajara Jalisco, Mexico and immigrated to the states at the age of eight.  I come from a large traditional Mexican family of 15, now we are ten.  I have five sisters and four brothers whom all live in the states here in California.  I feel very fortunate to have as many brothers and sisters as I do, and to have them all live near.  I’m the first and only one to have graduated from college and feel pretty proud of my accomplishments.  I received my bachelor’s degree in 1994 in journalism with an option in public relations and a minor in Spanish.  In 2004 I graduated with my multiple subject teaching credential with an emphasis in bilingual crosscultural language and academic development both from CSU, Chico.

In my professional work experience, I have had the opportunity to work in many settings ranging from federal, state, county and non-profit organizations.

I’m happily married (16 years) to my husband Emigdio and have three beautiful children Karina Lizette 12, Emigdio III 9, and Emiliano Sebastian 17 months.

Those that know me, know that I’m very passionate about life.  I am grateful for what I have especially my health and that of my family.  I like to work hard and enjoy everyday to the max.  My life motto is “ why make life harder than it needs to be, focus on the positive and make the most of every opportunity”

What My Interests Are

In my free time, which is rare, I enjoy listening to music, attending a good dance and going on speed walks in the park.  However, I have to admit my true love is creating stamped crafts and gifts that I can give and share with others.

Why Upward Bound Is Important To Me

When I hear the words Upward Bound I think opportunity! This program has helped me open many doors! I feel very privileged to share with people the fact that I am an Upward Bound Alumni.  I am extremely grateful to the staff and program for all of the encouragement and wisdom that was shared and given to me as a student.  As a professional, the support has continued. My goal in life is to help others!  I fee like many people have been fundamental in my success therefore I feel a calling to give back and help others succeed as well.

If you would like to write me, my email address is gramirez-carrillo@csuchico.edu
