Who I am

I was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. My family is Central American, I am half Salvadoran and half Honduran. I didn't grow up in the best area but I knew as a child that the only way out was to educate myself. I graduated from King/Drew Medical Magnet High School in 2003 and set off to explore college life. I am the first in my family to receive a degree from a university; I graduated from CSU, Chico in May of 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Health Service Administration. I always thought that I was going to end up being some sort of doctor or medical staff but later found out my true passion, which is helping others fulfill their goals. I have a twin brother, who taught me a lot through what he endured in life and I have two other brothers that also impacted my life in different ways.

My Interests

I am interested in traveling; I have been to Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and parts of the U.S. I would like to go to Paris, France since the French culture has always been a huge interest because of Quebec, Canada. I enjoy watching movies; if someone would have to guess what I am doing, they would mostly likely say relaxing with a good movie. I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my two nieces and nephew. I also take pleasure in spending time with my fraternity brothers who I consider to be part of my family. I have to say that I am a big fan of Harry Potter, Star Wars, Family Guy, Simpsons, I Love Lucy, and American Dad.

Why Upward Bound is Important to Me

I believe in this program because it helps high school students realize that they can accomplish anything in life. Sometimes we just need one person to believe in us to become successful. Upward Bound provides not just one person; it provides a large group of staff that believes in the future of the students we serve. Upward Bound works hard promoting higher education and academic success. Working for Student Support Services TRiO program sparked an interest to continue helping students reach their goals. Upward Bound is making a big impact in the communities we serve and this is a program that I want to be a part of because I understand how hard it can be for a first generation college student.

Feel free to contact me with any questions that you might have at comiranda@csuchico.edu. I will be glad to assist anyone with questions about college life and how to apply. I am here to serve you!
