Who I Am

I am the second youngest of nine siblings. I was born in Guanajuato, Mexico and came to the United States when I was 5 years old. Coming from a traditional family and being raised in a culture different than what my parents were accustomed to, was a challenge for them. Being so young, I did not see the challenges that my parents were faced with as they tried to always make sure I never forgot my culture and where I came from. My cultural roots are strong, and that I owe to my parents. I am very family oriented and love to spend time with my family. I am the first and only child in my family to attend and graduate from college. In 2011 I graduated from Chico State with a B.A. in Psychology. Being the first in my family to go to college was a challenge because I had no guidance from my older siblings like most people do. I made graduating from college a personal goal, so that I could be an example for my younger brother, nieces and nephews. I wanted to leave a path for them to follow and explore so that they can also, find their own path in life.

What My Interests Are

My interest consists of many things. To begin, I love to interact with others and I love spending time with my family. I love to laugh because laughing is good for the soul. I enjoy watching movies, attending cultural events, shopping and hanging out with my friends. I am a huge basketball fan, I support the San Antonio Spurs and of course the Sacramento Kings. I am very dedicated to my teams as I am to my job. A personal goal of mine is to go back to school and get my Masters Degree, and later become a high school counselor. I see the need that high schools have for counselors and my time here with Upward Bound will only help me get one step closer to that goal.

Why Upward Bound is Important to Me

Upward Bound is important to me for many reasons. Through Upward Bound I was able to really find my true passion in what I wanted to do. As a young college student, I was unsure of which career path to take. I had switched my mayor many times, and not until I obtained a job with Upward Bound as a Resident Advisor, did I find my career choice. Being able to interact and help students succeed academically was extremely rewarding. Another reasons why Upward Bound is important to me, is because of the connections that I am able to build with the students. As a first generation student, I understand the need and benefit to have someone guide you through such an important stage in life. Making an impact in someone else's life if truly fulfilling, especially when it comes to educating the generations of tomorrow.
