A Quote That You Like/Live By?
"The Purpose of Life is a Life of Purpose"
Who I Am
I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. I was the youngest child in a family with 3 older brothers so I learned how to play hard. Portland is the perfect city. It not only has a big city feel but it is a close drive for a day at the beach, an hour from Mt Hood and close to the Columbia River Gorge. Although I moved to Chico about 25 years ago, I still love visiting Portland, the surrounding Northwest and my family and friends who still live there.
In my early 20's I came to California to lead weekly bicycle tours through the Sierra Nevada Mountains with a youth organization called Young Life. I met my future husband Tom who, at the time, owned a bike shop in downtown Chico. We got married and the rest, as they say, is history. We have 3 children who keep us very busy, very entertained and make us very proud.
My daughter is currently at USF, my son is a high school student at PVHS and my youngest son just started junior high at Bidwell Junior. Yes, life is busy.
In my down time, I like to relax with a good book, complete house projects, work in my yard (my kids will tell you I am addicted to HGTV) or entertain friends at our home (My husband is an excellent cook!). We also like to visit my daughter in San Francisco and do all the touristy stuff that city has to offer!
Why Upward Bound Is Important to Me
I had worked on the Chico State campus for 24 years in the same dept when I woke up one day and said, "I need to do something different". I wanted a job that mattered, one the that helped others and gave me a sense of satisfaction at the end of the day. I wanted to contribute my time and energy in a positive way. In my free time I had always volunteered, usually in some way with youth organizations, now I wanted to incorporate my work with my personal life.
When I heard about Upward Bound I was immediately sold on the program and find myself on a daily bases wishing this program had existed for me in high school, it would have changed my life. To see the UB staff care so much for the students on a personal level and to cheer them on in their academic successes is so inspiring. It is exciting to be part of something so satisfying and life changing. I am glad I found Upward Bound and Upward Bound found me.
