A Quote That You Like/Live By?

"Humor is just another defense against the universe."

- Mel Brooks

Who I Am

I was born in San Francisco, California and lived there shortly before moving to and growing up in Santa Rosa, California. I graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1995. GO PANTHERS! I attended one year of Santa Rosa Junior College and then moved up to Chico to attend Chico State University. My first attempt at college was not a good one as I was not ready to be out on my own. The "nightlife" in Chico was very enticing and eventually I dropped out to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

For four years I bounced around from job to job. I worked in construction building houses, clearing forest, and paving roads in Forest Ranch. I worked graveyard shift at Kinko's for a while. I also did a lot of work with the Chico Area Recreation Department which allowed me to work with kids. None of the work was very fun or challenging, except CARD. My time working with kids was the best time I had and I realized that in my time with CARD I could get a degree to do this full time. When I was accepted back into Chico State I was definitely ready for school and graduated in 2006 with a degree in Recreation Administration.

Personally, I try not to take anything too seriously. I look for the lighter side of situations and try to make a joke whenever I can. Most of them aren't funny but when people laugh at me for saying something dumb, at least they are laughing. I am an optimist and believe that most everyone is good by nature and really try to find the good in other people.

What My Interests Are

I still enjoy working with kids and do so on a continual basis. I started my own Non-Profit and we run girls and boys basketball teams that travel all over playing competitive AAU basketball. Coaching really is something I love and I don't know what I would do if I wasn't working in some capacity with kids in sports. I have been the coach at Marsh Junior High for 6 years now and I love every minute of it. GO GATORS!

When I am not working with kids, I spend time with my dog Lily. I enjoy playing basketball, running, and listening to music of all types. I also love watching sports of all kinds. GO GIANTS, GO NINERS, GO WARRIORS! Finally, I like to cook for my friends and family. I like to experiment with different recipes and challenging myself to make more and more difficult dishes. Some are very good while others are, well, not as tasty.

Why Upward Bound is Important to Me

Upward Bound is important to me because it allows me to work with students. It lets me help kids help themselves, which is what drives me on a day-to-day basis. With my coaching I was able to teach and help kids in an athletic environment and with Upward Bound I am now able to help them in an academic environment. Working to provide opportunity for those that need it is something that I find very rewarding and I look forward to helping many students in my time at Upward Bound.
